Is your WIP a singular novel, a series of books, serial fiction, comics, or fanfiction?

Most of my work has been serials (The Mary Stories, Revin's Heart, Better Angels, Lady Cecelia's Journey, etc.) A Familiar Problem is a stand-alone novel, but could be part of a trilogy. I'm currently working on a stand-alone novel, The Ground Never Lies, which probably won't be part of a serial. Probably. I do love the characters, though, so I might want to visit them again sometime.

A biochemist stopped by my Readercon

Sat, 07/19/2025 - 10:22

A biochemist stopped by my Readercon dealer table and was captivated by the 任せて Human DNA Analysis tool. He listened to my pitch, then loaded and ran the tool. He accepted its report with good humor, wrote in the reported value, and said his colleagues would get a kick out of it. He said he'd be back to buy a book later.

A woman was walking by our Readercon

Sat, 07/19/2025 - 09:51

A woman was walking by our Readercon dealer table with an adorable little girl who had a very sour expression on her face. The mother spotted the cover of one of our Dragon Gems books that have cute, anthropomorphic dragons on them.
"Ooh! Dragons!" the mother said, tipping the book up so the girl could see it.
"Ech!" the girl said, with infinite disgust.
Someone is having quite the morning.

Forrest jumped down onto the man's chest. He strutted up to his throat and, leaning over his face, hissed down venomously at him. "If you don't pick it up in about 10 seconds, that's what your pukkin' face is going to look like!" (3/3)

Sat, 07/19/2025 - 07:10

"Do you know what kind of meat it is?" Forrest asked.
"Hamburger?"
"No! That's ground ."
"How can you tell?"
"Because you let the pukkin' wrapper blow off onto the pukkin' ground!" Forrest shrieked. The man backpedaled frantically and fell over backward. (2/3)

Sat, 07/19/2025 - 07:10

Forrest landed on a table by a young man fixing to cook his very first burger.
"That's some good looking meat you've got there," Forrest said, amiably.
"Really?" the young man replied. He was looking a bit queasy, preparing to form patties. "I've never done anything like this before." (1/3)

Korean fried chicken and "It's Complicated Being a Wizard," a DIPA from the Burlington Beer Company. A perfect end to a long day selling books in the Readercon bookstore.

We've come to Pressed Cafe in Burlington for breakfast. Good coffee and tasty burritos!
Daniel had said, when I suggested it, "Why are you making me go to the Depressed Cafe?"

"I'm a biological android. Real bears can't talk. I was made for a circus, to be scary."
He suddenly stood up and roared at her.
Brunhilde was unfazed. She clapped, laughing at his performance.
"Weren't you scared?" he asked.
"Of course not," she scoffed. "I know you'd never hurt me." (2/2)

Fri, 07/18/2025 - 06:16

"Hey! Hey!" Brunhilde said, walking alongside the bear. "Do you everything before you eat it?"
"No. You're thinking of a raccoon," the bear said. "People sometimes call them 'wash-bears.' But they're not really a bear. Of course, I'm not really a bear either."
"You're not?" (1/2)

17. Tell us about a book you like despite its cover (don't show the cover yet)

There was a book by @cstross (The Apocalypse Codex) that had a cover I couldn't stand. I checked the book out twice from the library, but every time I looked at the cover, I just couldn't make myself read it. I finally bought the ebook and, since I could just skip past the cover, and not have to see it every time I picked up the ereader, I could read the story — which I enjoyed immensely.

"Need a ?" the bear said, offering them his lighter.
"Oh, thank you!"
The man lit the coals. Flames soon rose and began to lick the grill. He passed the lighter back and the bear ambled away.
"Where do you suppose he keeps that thing?" the woman whispered to the man.
He shrugged. (2/2)

The bear wandered through the picnic

Thu, 07/17/2025 - 07:23

The bear wandered through the picnic area as people happily cooked out — many for the first time. Then he heard raised voices.
"Did you forget to pack it?" a man said.
"I'm sure I put it in there!" a woman replied.
They were digging through their supplies frantically looking for something. (1/2)

One of the things I appreciated the most about the Before Times was non-partisan government. I'm sure it wasn't always true then either. For the most part, however, government policy was driven by functionaries that were guided by the science and evidence, and not transparently corrupt as they are now. Now, everything is partisan and policy changes are seemingly entirely driven by fulfilling vendettas against opponents or findings ways to drive profits toward oneself and one's allies. It's sick.
