@stevendbrewer@wandering.shop - Fri, 06/26/2026 - 08:06

The Saintess made a glad cry and ran forward to see what it said.
The Hero strolled up to the sign. It said "Forbidden Forest."
"See?" he said. "I was right!"
"I hate you," she said. (3/3)

"We're right here!" the Hero said, pointing down.
"But where is 'here'?" she pressed.
"The Forbidden Forest?"
"Argh!" She gnashed her teeth.
"Look!" the Hero said. Up ahead, they could see a sign. (2/3)

The Hero and Saintess were deep in the Forbidden Forest.
The Saintess pulled out the and studied it for a minute, then finally threw her hands up.
"This is hopeless!" she said. "Admit it! We're lost!"
"What do you mean?" asked the Hero.
"We have no idea where we are!" (1/3)

How many of these heat waves will it take until people start saying, "Climate change? Global warming? WHY DID NO ONE TELL ME THIS WAS GOING TO HAPPEN!?"

"But you're the wise old owl!" Brunhilde said, eyes shining.
Forrest perked up, in spite of himself. "Well… I do know a thing or two."
"So easy!" thought Brunhilde. (3/3)

"Those are snowy owls — they're always white."
"Ptarmigans turn white," she countered.
"They're not owls." Forrest shook out his feathers. "Don't you have something better to do? Why do you keep asking me questions? Why don't you go pester that bear." (2/3)

"Hey! Hey!" Brunhilde

@stevendbrewer@wandering.shop - Thu, 06/25/2026 - 07:10

"Hey! Hey!" Brunhilde called up.
Forrest, who was resting on a branch during the quiet time in the afternoon, opened one eye.
"Do owls fly for the winter?" she asked.
"Some do and some don't. But I'm not an owl: I'm a biological android."
"Do you turn white in the winter?" she asked. (1/3)

"Oh?" said the Hero.
"I became over-extended on my credit card," the Demon Lord said.
Jaygor stared daggers at the Maid.
"How was I supposed to know that magic beans were so expensive?" the Maid said, pouring the coffee. (4/4)

"Would you like some coffee?" asked the Maid.
"Yes, please," the Hero said.
There was silence for several moments, as the Hero struggled to articulate the question.
"I had to rent out the Black Castle," the Demon Lord said. (3/4)

"I'll leave *that* to the Demon Lord to explain," said Jaygor. The Hero detected a note of bitterness in his tone.
They arrived in a dimly-lit chamber carved out of the living rock. The Demon Lord was seated, uncharacteristically, at a small wooden table. (2/4)

"Hello?" the Hero called.

"Hello?" the Hero called. His voiced echoed through the dark, empty corridors.
"This way," said Jaygor, unexpectedly from the side.
The Hero jumped, but then followed Jaygor through the twisting passages of the .
"Say…" he said, after a short time. "So why are you all down here?" (1/4)

Do you use or make maps in your writing process?

Not usually. I did make a map for Revin's Heart which is set on a group of islands. It was useful to keep track of the relative locations to help me maintain consistency during the writing process.

I thought about making a version of the map to include in the book, but decided I didn't want to invent stuff to fill out the parts of the map that hadn't been visited yet.

I did include it in a 'zine, tho:

"I'll be back later," she said, and blew him a kiss. She slipped out the door toward town.
The Demon Lord replaced his wallet. "This is going to be great!" he said as she left.
Jaygor just rolled his eyes. (4/4)

"Yes. Just a few details, really — to enhance the effect."
"How much will all this cost?" asked Jaygor.
The Maid batted her eyes. "Hardly anything!" she said.
The Demon Lord got out his billfold and began to extract some bills, but the Maid reached over and pulled out his credit card. (3/4)

The Demon Lord clenched his fist. "Soon the Hero will be on his knees, nothing more than a quivering mass of slime!"
"Pardon me, Demon Lord," the Maid said. "I think your plan will have a better chance of success if I can make a few purchases."
"Oh?" he said, interested. (2/4)

The Demon Lord chuckled, rubbing his hands together. The Maid touched up her lipstick using the mirror in a compact.
"Did something good happen?" asked Jaygor.
"Everything is going according to plan!" (1/4)

"Ugh," said the critic. "That's awfully cliched."
"To create is divine," said the poet. "To criticize is to be a total douchebag."
"Hey! I'm feeling pretty criticized!"
"Fly thee, then, upon wings of greatest haste, to the lowest circle of infernal damnation where you will be justly rewarded for your perfidy."
"Still pretty cliched…"
